The piece
Published in 1902, this rag by Scott Joplin found a wide new audience in 1973 through the film The Sting, whose soundtrack drew on several of his pieces. Ragtime sets a steady left hand, walking between bass notes and chords, against a syncopated melody that likes to land between the beats. Noctave's easy version keeps the introduction and the first theme, along with the tempo marking "Not fast".
The introduction passes from one hand to the other: the right hand states the phrase D–E–C–A, then the left hand repeats it two octaves lower before settling on a G. The theme begins with two chromatic eighths, D and D-sharp, then alternates E and C a sixth apart: an eighth on E, a quarter on C that lands off the beat. That syncopation, along with the notes tied across the beat, is what you need to count precisely, out loud at first. The left hand, in half notes, keeps the steady march the melody pushes against, and slips down along a chromatic line at the end.
