The piece

The theme of this movement had a second life: Beethoven reused it in his Septet, Op. 20. Here Tempo di menuetto means the pace of a minuet, three beats and nothing heavy, but the form is a rondo: the G major theme comes back twice, separated by contrasting episodes, one of them a more energetic section in C major. The movement closes the sonata with a smile, without straining for effect.

The left hand carries the real difficulty: 122 rapid jumps spanning an octave or more fall to it, against just four in the right. Under the theme it leaves a chord to fetch a low D and comes straight back up; in the C major episode it alternates low C and middle C on every eighth. Work on these shifts with your eyes on the target note and your arm close to the keyboard. The score also has 43 repeated notes, to be articulated cleanly without hammering. To keep the minuet character, lighten the third beat and let the melody breathe at the end of each phrase.
