Born in Nuremberg in 1653, Johann Pachelbel worked as an organist in Vienna, in Eisenach, and then for twelve years in Erfurt, where he taught Johann Christoph Bach, Johann Sebastian's elder brother; he ended his life at St. Sebaldus Church in his home town, from 1695 until his death in 1706. He wrote mostly for the organ and the church: chorale preludes, fugues, variations, motets, and the keyboard collection Hexachordum Apollinis (1699).
The catalogue presents his Canon in D, written for three violins and basso continuo, in two piano versions arranged for Noctave. Start with the easy version: the left hand repeats the eight-note bass while the right hand plays the first violin's opening variations, in quarter notes and then eighths. The complete version follows the canon to the end, with its sixteenths and thirty-seconds, and brings in the second violin where it enters, above the same bass.
